Application of ichneumon flies against the corn borer
Biological corn borer control by drone with high promotion
In the warm summer months, many farms are confronted with the effects of corn borer infestation, either directly or indirectly. Damages of 200 to 500 €/ ha are not uncommon and represent rather the lower limit.
In the control of the corn borer, the natural enemies, the ichneumon wasps Trichogramma brassicae, are used. These are released by Plantivo pilots using drones in small globules over the corn fields. After release, the parasitic wasps hatch out of the beads and parasitize the eggs of the corn borers. In this way, the next generation of corn borers is prevented from developing and new Trichogramma ichneumon flies hatch instead.
Support for corn borer control varies depending on the federal state. In Bavaria, it is subsidized via KULAP at €50/ha, in Baden-Württemberg via FAKT at €60/ha and in Rhineland-Palatinate via EULLa at €40/ha. The use of drones usually takes place between June and August, depending on the weather.
However, it should be noted that the application deadlines for funding are in February.

Simple flight
Example:
Without treatment, there is a damage of 10% , which corresponds to a risk of 150 €/ha based on a stock value of about 1,500 €/ha. Control by drones costs 19 €/ha (includes 69 €/ha for the balls, the application of ichneumon flies by drone and 50 €/ha subsidy). This method shows a good effect and is recommended in case of expected medium infestation.
Double flight
Example:
In case of an untreated infestation, a damage of 20% occurs. With a stock value of about 2,500 €/ha , this corresponds to a risk of 500 €/ha.
For the control by drone 39,- €/ha are charged (includes 89 €/ha for the balls, the application of the ichneumon flies by drone and 50 €/ha promotion). The measure shows a good effect at low cost and is recommended in case of expected heavy infestation.
